Preventive Maintenance

This method solves the problems associated with failure maintenance by giving the machinery a service similar to an M.O.T. on a car. The maintenance Engineer checks over the machine giving particular attention to wearing parts such as bearing and brushes etc. and checks cooling and lubrication systems. Any components or fluids that are likely to fail before the next service date are replaced/renewed and the machine is cleaned to remove dust and debris that has accumulated since the last service.

Preventive maintenance on the machinery does cost money; it also requires the machinery to be out of action for a short time at regular intervals. The other side of the argument states that the machinery will be running at its most efficient and there is only a very slight chance that it will breakdown at any time before the next service date. The downtime for servicing is arranged in advance for a time where the workload for the particular machine is low, or can be rescheduled. If the machine has been regularly maintained, then it should be possible to estimate the downtime required along with the rough cost, which can greatly aid the production scheduling. Of course, if the service time approaches and it's clear that the machine will need to be in use, then the service can safely be postponed for a short time with little risk of failure.
